Pure and simple does it

China’s government declared today, April 21, a day of national mourning for the 2,000-plus dead following last week’s earthquake in Qinghai province. The BBC covers the story here. One visible and moving aspect of the day is that all China’s leading websites are rendered in black and white.

For anyone familiar with the rip-snortingly vigorous design of popular sites in China, the simple removal of colour speaks volumes. A surprisingly powerful gesture, made entirely without words.
